Tips for Writers by Brad Hyde (March 9, 2008)

Have You Any of Either?

English has a number of words that are very close in meaning. Any or either, for instance, that help indicate your preferences for say, donuts.

If you have two donuts to choose from (too bad!), and have no preference then write, "I'll have either the jelly or the chocolate donut, please."

If you have three or more to choose from (lucky you!), and have no preference then write, "I'll have any of the eight flavours of donuts, please."
