The Scandinavian Connection

Have you been feeling hale and hearty recently. Good! Did you know that "hale" comes from the old Norse word for "whole"? To be feeling "hale" then means to be "whole," not a bad description for feeling well.

Another influence of the Norse are the words, "they," "their" and "them." It's hard to imagine English without them!

And, if you're not feeling well and "crawl" home or "droop" in the heat or "scowl" at another driver, you are using words borrowed from the Norse.

For more information see Wikipedia's entry List of English Words of Old Norse Origin.
