Nevertheless: Be Careful with However

Can “however” begin a sentence? Yes, of course it can!

However long he works at the project, John still is unable to complete it.

But, “however” can also begin a sentence like this one:

He paid full price. However, he was not happy with his purchase.

In this case “however” acts as conjunctive adverb, joining the ideas together in a cause and effect relationship. But, since many consider the second usage to be faulty, it is better to avoid it by using, instead the following construction:

He paid full price; however, he was not happy with his purchase.
