editpaperExample Expressions

Example is a word we use often and one that can be used in a number of different ways. Each one has its own, specific, meaning. Be careful to use each one correctly!

for example: The writer, for example, uses simile and metaphor often to help make his writing more interesting and alive.

by way of example: By way of example, the simile, "his movements were cat-like," demonstrates the hyphenated style of simile making.

to make an example (of someone): The teacher made an example of the student who used a plagiary in the classroom by giving her a zero mark on the presentation.

to set an example: The judge caught in the speed trap set an example for others by immediately taking responsibility and paying the fine promptly.

to take example:  We can take an example from the judge and follow his honest ways.nd.
