Tips for Writers by Brad Hyde (May 30, 2010)

Yes, Latin. English has a number of common expressions that are in Latin, a language no longer spoken.

Here are a three common examples:

"mea culpa" means, basically, "my fault"

"in memoriam" means "in memory of"

"RIP" means "Requiescat in pace" but, surprisingly, it also matches in meaning with the English translation, "Rest in peace."

You may freely use any of these expressions in your English writing.
