Tips for Writers by Brad Hyde

Student Responses to Lynne Truss on Punctuation

“Proper punctuation is both the sign and the cause of clear thinking.” The quote from Lynne Truss's book, Eats, Shoots and Leaves, made us stop to consider what she means.

"We need punctuation to make the meaning of a sentence clear."

"Proper punctuation shows the writer's clear and logical thinking."

"Punctuation makes a writer think clearly."

"By learning punctuation rules, we will also learn how to think more clearly."

"If we punctuate differently, we may change our meanings."

"A writer can create his own punctuation or follow his own rules, but this may mean that no other person will understand him."
