Topic Sentences: The Controlling Idea

Topic sentences contain "controlling ideas." Such ideas need to be explained, defined, clarified or illustrated by the writer. Thus, a good topic sentence is rarely a simple statement of fact. Not, "There is a vegetable store in my neighbourhood"; instead, "One of my neighbourhood stores is the best place to buy vegetables."
