What Do You Know? Developing an Essay Topic

September 24 and 25, 2003

Writing a successful essay requires good knowledge of a subject. In order to develop a practice essay, each student will begin by writing a short paragraph on a subject of interest to him or her.

Writing Exercise:

Today, we will write a paragraph (125 words) explaining or describing a topic that is interesting to us. You should know this topic very well.

Each paragraph must contain at least three unique examples.

Begin with a clear topic sentence and end with a good concluding sentence.

Homework:

Complete writing your paragraph. In addition, write three more examples/ideas for each of the examples you have given in your paragraph. Bring all your work to next week’s class.
