Advanced Composition: Description: Taking a Close Look
April 6, 2000

Writers need to describe what they see in words. To do this effectively, look closely at things. Tonight we will practice this skill using the picture. Then, we will use our imaginations to tell a story about it.

bulletDescribe this building. Start generally, and then name specific details. Start by describing the bottom half. Then, describe the top half. Imagine you can see colours. What are they?
bulletTell a story about his building. Who lives here? Why is this building built in this way? Name two people who live here and describe them in detail.
bulletWe'll discuss the vocabulary we need before we begin.
