Verbs Followed by Gerunds or Infinitives
April 8, 1999

Last week, we saw some verbs that are always followed by gerunds (nouns made from verbs). There are some verbs, however, that take either a gerund or an infinitive verb (E.g.: "to go").

Examples of verbs followed by gerunds or infinitive verbs

I hate asking you for money. I hate to ask you for money.

I dislike hearing about problems with money. I dislike to hear about problems with money.

I continue going to the movies every week. I continue to go to the movies every week.

Tonight, it will begin to rain. Tonight, it will begin raining.

Paragraph Assignment

Write a short paragraph (or some sentences) about a serious problem in your community. Use three or four of the example verbs in your writing. Write a topic sentence, indent five spaces, and please double space your writing. Teacher Writing Sample
