About Ourselves: Feeling “Out of Place”

April 29, 2005

This week, we will discuss times we have felt “out of place” in a new environment. After our discussion, we will write a paragraph using an anecdote to illustrate our feelings.

Today’s Class Work:

  1. Take the fill-in-the-blank vocabulary quiz on “Black Elk Speaks.”
  2. Hand in your vocabulary sentences to the teacher. The teacher will share some sentences for correction.
  3. Do the group work and writing with the help of your teacher.

Group Work:

Discuss one or more times that you felt “out of place” (like Black Elk does in New York, for example).

Tell your fellow students the anecdote (little story). Let them ask you for more details. Write down the details other students are interesting in knowing more about.

Writing the Details:

Write your anecdote. Write a good topic sentence for your paragraph.

We will share our topic sentences at the end of the class.

Homework:

Complete your paragraph on the topic, feeling “out of place.”

Bring your homework to class on Friday, May 6.
