English 10 Short Story: "The Father"
Group Questions and Writing Assignment

With your group, discuss the answers to each question. Choose one person to write each answer, and another to speak for your group. After you are finished, we will share the answers in class.

1. On his first three visits to the priest, Thord's character is revealed. Examine his words and actions and comment on what we know about Thord from these.

2. The priest's character is revealed through his questions and comments to Thord. Look at three questions he asks Thord and explain what each question reveals about the priest.

3. Thord's son has become a "blessing" to him at the end of this story. Explain what kind of "blessing" the author means.

Paragraph Assignment:

Write a paragraph to explain how the author reveals Thord's character. Discuss Thord's appearance, actions, and speech in your paragraph. Finally, note how Thord has changed at the end of the story, and how this change is revealed.
