PEARSON ADULT LEARNING CENTRE
English 10 Essay on Cheating
First Draft Exercise

Today, using the facts and examples gathered from our class discussions and the newspaper article, we will write a short essay. Do not use your dictionary for this draft.

Step One:

Write TWO body paragraphs (125 to 150 words each)

The topic for body paragraph one: Reasons that students cheat. The topic for body paragraph two: Actions we can take to reduce cheating.

Write a good topic sentence for each body paragraph. Give three examples for each paragraph. Conclude the paragraph with a suitable sentence.

Step Two:

Write ONE concluding paragraph (no more than 75 words). Your thesis (first sentence) will state that the problem of cheating is serious and needs to be solved (write your own sentence, please)

Refer generally to the examples you used in your two body paragraphs. End the paragraph with a sentence that makes a prediction.

Step Three:

Write ONE introductory paragraph (no more than 75 words).

Begin with an anecdote about a student who is caught cheating in school. End with a thesis sentence that states the problem of cheating is serious and needs to be solved (use your own words; do not copy your concluding, restated thesis, exactly).

Step Four:

Assemble the paragraphs into an essay. Revise the essay. Make two changes per paragraph. Bring both the original and revised essays to our next class on October 31, 2001.

See a Teacher Writing sample of this essay.
