"Feeling a Fool while Going to School"

March 6, 2002

Today, in class, we will read Albert Koehl's short essay on his experiences with learning Chinese. This article, published in The Globe and Mail, will be read and discussed in the following way.

All students will read, silently, one time through without a dictionary.

Teacher will read, orally, one time through.

Students will work together, in groups, to define 12 vocabulary words through context clues. (without dictionaries)

Following our reading, we will discuss the article and prepare ourselves for the essay assignment that follows.

Writing Assignment (Due, in class, on March 13, 2002):

Using the article, "Feeling a Fool While Going to School," as a model, write a short essay on your own experiences with learning a new language. 

Write three body paragraphs of no more than 75 to 100 words on each of the following topics. Try, if you can, to relate something humorous or funny in at least one example.

1. Difficulties in pronunciation.

2. Problems with reading.

3. Something you've learned about a different culture by learning a new language. (as Koehl has about, for example, the verb "to go" in Chinese)

Write a short introduction and conclusion of no more than 25 to 40 words each to complete your essay. Teacher Sample Essay for this assignment.
