The Canadian Red Cross
Helen's Weekly Feature

Two Vocabulary Quizzes based on Helen's Feature

Since 1896, the Canadian Red Cross has been dedicated to helping Canadians and the victims of conflicts or disasters around the world. The Red Cross is prepared, on a daily basis, to respond to a crisis by providing humanitarian aid and helping people in life-threatening situations. The Canadian Red Cross is part of the International Red Cross Movement and is the largest disaster preparedness and relief network in the world.

At the time of a disaster, the Red Cross offers immediate basic 'relief' such as shelter, clothing, food, first aid and emotional support.

Later, during the 'recovery' phase, the Red Cross remains on the scene— even after the world's attention has turned elsewhere. The Red Cross works with other relief groups to provide ongoing assistance to help the members of the community get back home, back to school and back to work as quickly as possible.

If a loved one is in the disaster area, family members elsewhere can call the Red Cross for information about conditions and loved ones in the affected area.

The Red Cross is well known and respected for its work with First Aid Services. Their aim is to reduce death and suffering and to bring care and comfort to as many as possible. There are seven Canadian Red Cross First Aid programs for all ages and for all skill and interest levels— from babysitters to emergency responders. They train more than 5 000 instructors and 300 000 participants every year in various First Aid and Injury Prevention programs.

You could be a volunteer. The Red Cross needs your help to prepare for tomorrow. Learn how to prevent injuries and how to react in emergency situations. Contact your local Red Cross office.
