Personal Counselling at the PALC
 by
Pat

Jane Osborne is our on-site personal counselor and is available to help all students at the learning center, free of charge. Jane counsels students individually and also provides useful workshops. Jane has been working with adult students for 14 years.

How can Jane help students?

Sometimes, students experience personal problems that can interfere with their success and need some advice. For example, students might want to talk to Jane if they have concerns with any of the following: school, family, relationships, parenting, adjusting to a new country, substance abuse, violence, isolation, transitions, grief and loss, learning styles, time management, goal setting, and many more.

You donít have to wait until you have serious problems to see Jane. Just having someone to listen to you while you try to make an important decision can be helpful.

Important: Janeís services are private and confidential!

If you are trying to get help in the community, Jane can also help you find the right resource.

How can students make an appointment to see Jane?

You can go to the Pearson office to make an appointment or call 604-517-6299. Teachers will also be happy to help you if you have any questions.

What will students learn in Janeís workshops?

In addition to individual personal support, Jane offers group workshops. Currently, there is a series running specifically for immigrant students to help settle into the community. Topics include the following: community services, communication skills, Canadian government, understanding your childís school system, assertiveness skills, workers rights, and tenancy rights.

This series is part of a partnership with Pacific Immigrant Resources Society, and is made possible with a grant from United Way.

Also, Jane offers workshops throughout the school year on topics aimed at making students more successful in their studies. Topics include: study skills, learning styles, test taking skills, time management, and more.

Keep your eyes open for posters and news of upcoming workshops!
