Volunteering in Your Community
Tazim's Weekly Feature

Many students ask me how they can improve their speaking and listening skills in English. I always tell them that the best way to see a marked improvement is by practicing their speaking and listening.

Opportunities to practice listening skills are all around us, in the form of television news, radio and the large selection of listening tapes we have in our computer room. The ability to practice speaking in English is more limited as most of students have little contact with English speakers outside the school.

Volunteering opens up a whole world of opportunities for students who are able to devote some time on a regular basis to improve their speaking and listening skills as well as help out organizations in the local community which require volunteers. The following links will take you to two volunteering sites which you can contact to pursue volunteering opportunities.

Remember to specify very clearly that your objective is to improve your speaking and listening skills in English so that you are appropriately placed in a volunteer job. Good luck with your placement in a volunteer position which will help you as well as the people you join.
