Family Literacy Week

January 25 – 31, 2009 is Family Literacy Week in British Columbia.

The proclamation making January 27 Family Literacy Day in BC outlines the importance of literacy which includes: improving writing, reading, and other basic literacy skills is vital to our social and economic development, and family literacy skills strengthens families and builds strong communities. Some ways to encourage and promote family literacy are:

Make a grocery list
Write a letter to family members, e.g. grandparents
Follow recipes when cooking or baking
Let your children count out the change required at the store

Various activities, such as story time sessions and author readings, will be held province wide during Family Literacy Week. As well, to celebrate Family Literacy Day 2009, many libraries nationwide will host public, 30-minute readings on January 23 and/or 24 in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for “Most Children Reading with an Adult, Multiple Locations."
