Jennifer's Weekly Feature
Snoring and Other Sleep Problems

Ahhhh! It's the end of a long day. You've worked hard, studied hard, maybe taught hard, and you're tired. You're ready for bed and a good, long, well-earned sleep. You climb into bed and what's this? You hear rumbles. An earthquake? No. Your partner is snoring. Sleep is impossible. You sigh, shift, turn over, and try to think of other reasons you still love him or her!

Snoring can be treated by doctors. So can sleep apnea, a condition in which a person stops breathing briefly during sleep, usually badly scaring his or her mate! The science of sleep problems is part of otolaryngology, (pronounced oh toe lair un JOLL uh gee), the study of the ear, nose and throat. While snoring is usually caused by a blockage in the breathing path, and can be treated with pills or surgery, sleep apnea is a more serious problem, and needs to be treated by a sleep problem specialist. If you are one of the millions who suffer with it or from it, check out the web sites below to reclaim sleepless nights!

1. Laser Surgery for Snoring and Sleep Apnea - This site gives an article about sleep problems, and has pictures.

2. Snoring Help.com - This site is a snoring home page, with general information and pictures.

3. WebMD: Snoring Topic Overview - Very complete and well referenced article on snoring.

4. Snoring Information - A Stanford professor gives causes and treatments for snoring and also lists related articles.
