Renuka's Weekly Feature
A Special Birthday

Do you know anybody who is 150 years old? Neither do I! However, the city of New Westminster celebrates its 150th birthday this year!

The “Royal City” was named by Queen Victoria and was the first capital city of British Columbia. While it no longer remains the capital, New Westminster certainly hasn’t lost it’s royal identity. Some reminders are in the names Royal Avenue, Royal City Centre, and Royal Columbian Hospital. To learn more about the history of New Westminster, you can visit the following website:

Throughout 2009, there are events to commemorate this special year in New Westminster. To take part in the celebrations, you can view the 150th Anniversary Celebration website. This website contains a calendar with dates and descriptions of events that celebrate the past, present, and future of New Westminster.

Happy 150th Birthday, New West!
