Reflections on Summer
by Trudi

The first week of school has come so quickly after a long, hot, and hopefully enjoyable summer. As I prepare myself and my children to go to school, we have been talking about how exciting it will be to learn something new and share it with each other. As my children are just beginning their journey into the world of formal education, I wanted to inspire them with the understanding that they learn everyday and that these experiences help us appreciate the world more. In helping them get ready for school, I found myself learning and re-learning some very important things myself.

I have learned that while being excited about something new, it is also perfectly normal to be a little scared too. I have learned that listening means to go beyond words and hear what the heart is saying. I have learned that life takes a lot of bravery. I have learned that independence is hard for the child and the grown-up. I have learned that the world is a very, very big place. I have learned that every time you move up a level, the teacher expects you to do harder things. I have learned that it is important to stop and look at everything around you (every tree, leaf, and rock really is different!). I have learned that crunching leaves in the summer is as much fun as in the fall. I have learned all the names and jobs of different farm and building machines. I have learned that everything and anything can be a treasure.

There is so much more that my children have taught me this summer. As they race ahead to grow up, I realize how much I want time to slow down. And that is the most important thing I have learned - slow down and enjoy the moment.

I hope that you have enjoyed the summer and are ready to come back to school energized and refreshed. We look forward to seeing you at registration time.
