Dazzling Weekend Fun: The Abbotsford International Air Show
by Paul

Considered the largest air show on the west coast of North America, The Abbotsford International Airshow is held yearly on the second Friday to Sunday of every August.  In this year, 2012, therefore, it is scheduled for August 10th, 11th, and 12th.  Designated since 1970 as Canada’s National air show, the Abbotsford International Airshow is performed at the Abbotsford International Airport in the City of Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada.  The City of Abbotsford is about 100 km east of the city of Vancouver, British Columbia.

This year is particularly significant since it marks the Airshow’s 50th Anniversary.  The Abbotsford International Airshow, however, wasn’t Vancouver Lower Mainland’s first big festival of flights.  In the 1930’s, the Western Canada Annual Air Show was held in the City of Richmond, British Columbia, at the Sea Island Airport.  This airport has since grown to the now well-known Vancouver International Airport.

The Abbotsford International Airshow was started in 1962 by the Abbotsford Flying Club.  The original intent for starting this Airshow was simply to promote flying to and from the Abbotsford Airport.  About 15 000 spectators attended the first Airshow which was an unqualified success.  The Airshow’s popularity quickly grew and within only three years, by 1965, it had become the largest airshow in Western Canada.  The current average annual attendance is around 120 000.

The Airshow features many civilian, commercial, and military aircraft predominately from Canada and the United States.  Also featured often are aircraft from other countries such as Britain, Germany, Russia, and likely others.  The Canadian Museum of Flight is also expected to participate by lending some of its classic Canadian planes to the Airshow.

There are numerous ground exhibits, as well as daring yet exciting aeronautical performances and maneuvers to watch and follow.  Be prepared to be dazzled by amazing flying routines, stunt flights, and coordinated parachute jumping.  The Canadian Forces Snowbirds plane formation team and the Canadian Forces Skyhawks parachute formation team will participate in this year’s Airshow.  These two teams are renowned for their incredible and breathtaking air show style and performance.

So if you’re interested in flying, airplanes, aeronautics, or just looking for some fun and entertainment for your family, then be sure to consider attending the Abbotsford International Airshow.  I plan to attend, so I may see you there!
