Summer Rodeo
by Charlotte

Rodeo, a word first used to refer to a cattle round-up, now refers primarily to a public exhibition of cowboy skills using horses and livestock. Here in Western Canada, the rodeo circuit started off in March and continues right through to September. Cowboys and cowgirls travel from one rodeo to another, across Alberta and British Columbia, competing in events such as tie-down roping, team roping, steer wrestling, saddlebronc riding, bareback bronc riding, bull riding, and barrel racing.

The largest rodeo, the Calgary Stampede, is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year and runs from July 6th-15th, 2012. Closer to home, the Cloverdale Rodeo takes place every May long weekend. For those who are still interested in participating in a family-fun weekend, The Chilliwack Fall Fair and Rodeo is planned for the August 10th-12th weekend.

Be sure to check out www.rodeo.com before you start out on your summer travels. You might just be surprised to discover cowboys and cowgirls showing off their talent on horses and bulls “in your own backyard”!
