This Monday, February 11th, our school will be closed for the Family Day holiday. This is a new public holiday in British Columbia. Every year, starting in 2013, British Columbians will observe Family Day on the second Monday in February. On public holidays, commonly called statutory holidays or "stats", most workers have a paid day off. Employees who must work on this day are entitled to another day off instead, or they get paid 1.5 to 2 times their normal daily pay.
Many other provinces also have a Family Day holiday. In Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, and Prince Edward Island, the Family Day holiday is on third Monday in February. Two of these provinces have a different name for the holiday on this date. In Manitoba, the holiday is called Louis Riel Day, and in Prince Edward Island, the holiday is called Islander Day.
