Two Years on Life’s Road

Two years on life’s road has been a bit rocky at times, but not without its pleasures. In April of 2000, the “Lives Lived” piece on my best friend, John, was published in The Globe and Mail: a great day on my journey, but mixed with a sadness darker than the clouds that shroud us on a rainy Vancouver day. In 2001, my daughter reached her teenage years. It’s like a hot needle in the heart seeing your child grow older. My sister birthed a son and I fondly remembered rocking her in my parents’ old red chair. This year my road has become broader: My son’s story was published in an anthology of writing; my daughter entered high school. The sun has smiled on my house the past two years, but whenever I try to hold on to that pleasure, it dances away like dust motes in the air. (Written in April 2002; revised October 2004. 148 words)
