The following paragraph was written in response to the lesson,  Making the Dash Work for You and provides an example of using the dash in two different ways.

The Jaywalker: Paragraph Demonstrating the Use of the Dash

Once,  I got stopped—a long time ago when I was young and foolish—by a police officer in downtown Vancouver. I only worked downtown for one week in my entire life, but that week I managed to get a 15 dollar ticket for jaywalking. It was a long commute back to my parents' home—each way took over 45 minutes by bus. There was no Skytrain back then! I noticed the bus was about to leave its stop. Unfortunately, I was on the other side of an intersection, waiting at a red light. And, I hadn't noticed a burly motorcycle cop watching me. I dashed across, pretending I was in Montreal or some place where red lights are "optional." I not only missed my bus, but also ended up with a hefty ticket. This was 1975, and 15 dollars was about half a day's pay. Until now, this has been—I know I tempt fate here—the only "moving" violation of my life. I imagine that I'll remember my dash across Seymour Street forever.
