Vocabulary Notes from Social Studies

Climate is more than weather; climate is all parts of the weather. Vancouver’s climate is moderate, somewhat wet, and too hot.

How have you adapted to Vancouver’s climate? I bought a really big umbrella! I bought a good quality raincoat. I have big rubber boots. An animal may grow a long fur coat in winter to adapt or hibernate (go to sleep).

Giant is an adjective, which is close in meaning to “huge” or “very large”.

The grey whale is a giant animal.

The ice house the Inuit make is called an “igloo”.

Once, we called these people “Eskimo”. Do not do this anymore! This word means “eaters of fat”. Inuit means “the people”.

The Canadian Shield is very old rock. Some people want to bury old nuclear (atomic) waste there.
