Is a Flood Coming?
Recently, sandbags appeared along the Fraser River bank at the New Westminster Quay. This year we received “unusually deep snow” on the mountains. We may have to face the prospect of flooding as the snow pack melts.
In the Lower Mainland, the Fraser River is rising rapidly and will continue to rise to about six metres at Mission, comparable to 1999 levels.
Two local residents are optimistic: they said, “This place is safe.”
But on June 1, Allan Chapman, head of the River Forecast Centre, said, “The next two to three weeks is the critical period with respect to flooding on most of the major rivers in the province.”
